“Collecting Oral History” is a project which integrates historical inquiry, reading, writing, visual arts and research. Barbara Brockmann observes that children naturally soak up historical long before they are formally taught it – and that teachers need to help students make connections their society and history before the popular myth makers in the media do it with inaccurate knowledge. What better way to help students make the connections than with their own family stories? Easy to institute and deeply affirming, see student samples and find out how to run the project yourself.
“Collecting Oral History” est un projet qui allie l’enquête historique, la lecture, l’écriture, les arts visuels ainsi que la recherche. Barbara Brockmann a observé que les enfants absorbent naturellement l’information historique et cela bien avant qu’elle leur soit enseignée de façon formelle – et que les enseignants ont besoin d’aider les élèves à établir des liens entre leur société et l’histoire avant que les fabricants de mythes populaires des médias ne le fassent en incluant de l’information erronée. Quelle pourrait être la meilleure façon d’aider les élèves à établir ces liens sinon qu’avec leurs propres histoires familiales ? Venez voir des exemplaires de travaux réalisés par des élèves et trouver comment mettre en œuvre le projet vous-mêmes, lequel se veut très révélateur et facile à instituer.
Barbara Brockmann teaches for the OCDSB and was a 2002 Recipient of the Governor General’s Award for Excellence in Teaching Canadian History. Barbara Brockmann enseigne au sein du OCDSB et fut récipiendaire du Prix du Gouverneur general pour l’excellence en enseignement de l’histoire canadienne en 2002.
